As you may already know, your eyes are your most important asset when playing paintball. Having decent aim definitely helps too, but it’s no good if you can’t see what you’re shooting at, now does it?

Having clear vision will allow you to see your opponents, aim, and find cover quickly and easily to dodge attacks and hide from opponents. It is also imperative to keep your eyes protected during the game in order to avoid physical injury. The aforementioned mask is a great starter for those looking to purchase something quick and cheap and get out there to start playing right away.

Breakdown of the Features

This mask has some really good features for those who are just starting out in the sport. Though it is on the inexpensive side of masks don’t let that deter you from what this little thing can do. Here is a quick breakdown of what this mask has to offer:

  • Thermo-cured lenses for anti-fog protection.
  • Elastic band for adjustability.
  • Wide peripheral lens.
  • Protective hard plastic frame.
  • Air-soft design for comfort around nose, ears, and eyes.

All of these features add up to a great beginner’s mask for a reasonable price. The lens being thermo-cured basically means that it is chemically treated to prevent fogging. This process is very effective both for fog resistance as well as cost. You will usually find this technique of anti-fogging on less expensive masks as it doesn’t require as much material as the dual-lens does to manufacture. You will need to replace the lens once the treatment wears off, but replacements are also inexpensive and easy to do.

The strap is an adjustable elastic, so you can easily tighten it to stay securely on your head and protect your face. It also features air-soft protection for the most sensitive parts of your face, ensuring the safety of your nose, eyes, and ears.

The wide peripheral is crucial and this mask delivers. When properly adjusted to fit your face it is easy to move around and see in all directions with a clear line of vision. Along with this, the hard-protective frame is perfect for stopping any paintballs that don’t break and keeping your face safe. Let’s face it, we have some pretty sensitive things going on in our face, and I for one am a big fan of not getting hit in the nose with even a small projectile.

The air-soft design is a must have feature as well because if the mask isn’t comfortable you won’t want to keep it on very long, which kind of defeats the purpose of buying one. This design allows you to play long games without having to constantly adjust the mask to fit your face.

The First Impression

The first thing I noticed about this mask was the price, and I was definitely a fan of that. Though it is on the less expensive side of the spectrum it is designed for beginner use and holds up extremely well during play. I am impressed with the type of sturdy plastic it is made out of, replaceable lens is highly enjoyable, which allows for an awesome field of vision without fogging. They aren’t particularly expensive to replace and super-fast and easy. I also like how easy the elastic straps are to adjust, though I don’t really have to do it that much. The last thing I will mention about what impressed me was the wide field of vision. The lenses stretch out to the side of my face and allow me to use my peripherals like I would be able to without wearing a mask.

The Pros of the GXG XVSN Paintball Mask

There are an incredible number of advantages to using this helmet, and we’ll highlight a few in this section before getting to the nitty gritty. Overall, we’re pretty impressed with what this mask has to offer for the price. The structure is sound, it doesn’t fog up at all, and I can see in all directions when I’m wearing it. It’s pretty comfortable without having to worry about it shattering into a million pieces if a ball doesn’t break on it and I can adjust it quickly if there is too much pressure on my nose or ears. I also like how cheap the replacement lenses are so I went ahead and ordered a few of them just to be on the safe side and it was barely a drop in my financial bucket, which is great for someone just starting out considering how high the initial cost can be to get all of your equipment.

The Cons of the GXG XVSN Paintball Mask

There are a few drawbacks we’ve gathered with this mask that I think are worth mentioning. Those who usually have trouble keeping their ears comfortable when wearing masks should find solace in knowing this one shouldn’t bother them. Those with glasses may find that the helmet is a little tight, but it doesn’t affect the performance whatsoever for those who fit normally – especially those who hate foggy goggles/lenses.

Speaking of fogging, we do like how effective the thermo anti-fog treatments; however, the material used will eventually wear off and the lens will need replacing and I would hate to notice that in the middle of a game. I usually carry an extra with me just in case I need to swap it out really quick, but I like to be prepared like that – Boy Scout for life.

The Final Verdict

At the end of the day what it really comes down to is whether or not this is a good product for the price and I would say “absolutely.” It’s not a huge investment that you’re stuck with if you change your mind about it later on and it’s perfect if you or your kids are just getting started. Our favorite thing about this mask is how wide the lenses are and how it allows you to stay aware of your surroundings when playing. While it can get a little tight towards the face depending on your facial structure, we think you would be hard to find something that works as well as this mask does.
